About Clean Pulse
Clean Pulse shows your heart rate in large, color-coded numbers during a workout on your Apple Watch, and gives you a haptic tap when you move between heart rate zones. You start Cycling, Running, Cross-country skiing or Walking workouts from the watch or from the iPhone app, and the workout is saved to Apple Health when you end it.
What you need
| Device | Requirement |
|---|---|
| iPhone | iOS 27 or later. The iPhone has no heart rate sensor, so it shows the heart rate from your Apple Watch. |
| Apple Watch | watchOS 27 or later, paired with the iPhone. The watch measures your heart rate and runs the workout. |
Frequently asked questions
How do I start a workout?
On Apple Watch: open Clean Pulse and tap Cycling, Running, Cross-country skiing or Walking.
From iPhone: open Clean Pulse and tap one of the four tiles. The iPhone asks your watch to start the workout, so the watch must be paired, unlocked and nearby. The workout runs on the watch; the iPhone shows your heart rate live.
How do I end a workout?
On the watch, touch and hold the screen, choose End workout and confirm with End and save. The workout is then saved to Apple Health.
How do I change the heart rate zones?
Touch and hold the screen to open the Edit menu, then choose Set thresholds. Use the − and + buttons for Green, Amber and Red. The thresholds can never end up in the wrong order. The default values are 135, 139 and 149 beats per minute. Heart rate above the Red limit is shown in dark red.
The watch and the iPhone keep their thresholds separately, so set them on each device.
What do the vibrations mean?
- One tap: between green and amber.
- Two taps: between amber and red.
- Three taps: between red and dark red.
- Short taps mean you moved up a zone. The same number of long vibrations means you moved down.
The heart rate shows "--" or does not update
- Wear the watch snugly on the wrist, a finger-width above the wrist bone, and wait a few seconds.
- Check that Heart Rate is allowed: Settings → Privacy & Security → Health → Clean Pulse (or in the Health app: your profile → Apps → Clean Pulse).
- On iPhone, keep the watch nearby and unlocked. If the connection is lost, the iPhone only shows what has reached Apple Health, which can be several minutes late.
Clean Pulse asks for Health or location access, or I said no by mistake
Clean Pulse needs Health access to read your heart rate and to save your workouts. Location access is only used to save the route of outdoor workouts. You can change both at any time:
- Health: Settings → Privacy & Security → Health → Clean Pulse.
- Location: Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services → Clean Pulse. Without location access your workouts are still saved, but without a route.
The watch app is not installed, or the workout does not start on the watch
- On iPhone, open the Watch app → My Watch → Clean Pulse, and make sure Show App on Apple Watch is on.
- Keep the watch unlocked, near the iPhone, with Bluetooth and Wi-Fi on.
- Restart both devices and try again.
- If it still fails, open Clean Pulse on the watch and start the workout there.
Where is my workout saved?
In Apple Health, with heart rate, active energy, distance and other measurements the watch collects for the workout type, and a route for outdoor workouts. Open the Fitness app or the Health app to see it. Clean Pulse itself does not store your workouts.
Heart rate on the Lock Screen
When you start a workout from a tile in the iPhone app, Clean Pulse can show your heart rate on the Lock Screen and in the Dynamic Island. iOS asks once whether to allow Live Activities. In the app, touch and hold the screen and use Lock Screen: pulse only to show only the heart rate. If the card does not appear, check Settings → Clean Pulse → Live Activities. Anyone who can see your locked screen can see the heart rate shown there.
